Good to know about Rome

  • Public transport tickets must be purchased in advance from 'tabaccherie' (tobacco shops) or newsstands and validated upon boarding; riding without a validated ticket will result in a fine. Source
  • Mushroom foraging in Lazio requires an annual permit, is only allowed on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and has a strict harvest limit of 3 kg per person. Source
  • For cherry blossoms, head to the EUR lake park, where Tokyo donated 2,500 sakura trees; the Japanese Cultural Institute also has a garden, but often requires advance booking for visits during bloom. Source
  • While many state museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month, the Vatican Museums (which are technically in Vatican City) famously offer free entry only on the last Sunday of each month, and often close early on that day. Source
  • Although Rome isn't directly in the mountains, you can easily reach several ski resorts like Terminillo, Campo Felice, and Ovindoli within a 1.5 to 2-hour drive for a day trip. Source
  • Rome is generally safe for solo female travelers, but pickpocketing is a common issue, especially on crowded public transport routes like the #64 bus to the Vatican; always keep your valuables secure and in front of you. Source
  • While Rome is famous for traditional espresso bars, specialty coffee is a growing but distinct scene; remember that ordering coffee at an outdoor table in tourist areas often costs significantly more than drinking it standing at the bar like a local. Source
  • Many great hiking trails are easily accessible from Rome by public transport or a short drive, offering a quick escape to nature beyond the city's historical sites. Source
