Good to know about Stuttgart

  • Stuttgart Airport is conveniently close to the city center, but the most efficient way to get there is by S-Bahn (lines S2 or S3) as frequency is high and the journey direct. Source
  • The VVS transit system is excellent, but remember to validate your ticket BEFORE boarding a train or bus, as there are no turnstiles and fines for not doing so are steep. Source
  • For the most impressive cherry blossoms, head to the 'Birkenkopf', but peak bloom is often very short, typically just a few days in late March or early April. Source
  • The car museums (Mercedes-Benz and Porsche) are must-sees, but to avoid the biggest crowds, try to go early in the morning or on a weekday, and book your tickets in advance. Source
  • Stuttgart has many 'Stäffele' (staircases) leading to fantastic views, but some are quite steep and not suitable for those with mobility issues or strollers. Source
  • Stuttgart's Christmas Market is massive, but for a more local and less crowded experience, seek out the smaller markets in surrounding districts like Esslingen or Ludwigsburg. Source
  • The 'Neuer Wein' (new wine) is available during harvest season at 'Besenwirtschaften', but it's a very seasonal product and can run out quickly, so plan your visit in September or October. Source
  • Wine harvest season in Stuttgart is very local, but be aware that the 'Besenwirtschaften' (temporary wine taverns) that open during this time often have very irregular hours and are typically cash-only. Source

Year-round profile

How Stuttgart scores, dimension by dimension

Calmbalanced · 50Why

While the city center can be lively, extensive green spaces like the Schlossgarten and Rosensteinpark offer easy retreats within the city. For a quieter experience, you can explore the vineyards or the Bohnenviertel, known for its cozy cafés and antique shops. However, nightlife on streets like Theodor-Heuss-Straße can be quite active, especially on weekends.

Adventurebalanced · 42
Naturelight · 39Why

Stuttgart has abundant green spaces like the "Green U" connecting several parks and extensive vineyards that shape its unique landscape. While you can enjoy walks among the hills and vineyards, the city experiences significant light pollution, meaning stargazing is limited.

Foodlight · 39Why

You will find a good selection of traditional Swabian dishes like Maultaschen and Spätzle, alongside a growing number of vegan restaurants such as Heaven's Kitchen or Soy Club. The city has a few Michelin-starred restaurants, like 5 or Zur Weinsteige, offering fine dining, but a broader, diverse international street food or tapas scene is not a highlight.

Sportbalanced · 41
Culturestrong · 67
Socialbalanced · 51Why

Meeting people is possible, especially around the Hans-im-Glück fountain district or on Theodor-Heuss-Straße, which come alive with bars and clubs. There are also various festivals throughout the year that draw crowds.

Familylight · 26Why

While the city center is walkable, you will find more dedicated family attractions like Wilhelma Zoo, Killesberg Park with its playgrounds, and various outdoor adventure parks a bit outside the immediate core. Day trips to places like Erlebnispark Tripsdrill or the Riesenrutschbahn Poppeltal are popular options for families.

Romancebalanced · 53Why

You can enjoy a romantic evening at a Michelin-starred restaurant such as 5 or Zur Weinsteige, or relax at one of the city's mineral baths in Bad Cannstatt or Berg, known for their thermal springs. Picturesque vineyard walks also offer a serene setting for couples.

Productivitybalanced · 52Why

You can expect good internet speeds and a reliable public transport system for getting around. While there are coworking spaces, the city's infrastructure supports a working environment, but you might find fewer dedicated co-working hubs compared to larger metropolitan areas.

Valuelight · 26Why

Stuttgart can be a moderately expensive city, especially for accommodation, which ranks among Germany's more costly cities. While groceries might be in line with the German average, dining out or a monthly public transport pass can be pricier than the European average.

Authenticityvery strong · 75Why

The city feels very authentic because it is less visited by mass tourism than other major German cities, allowing you to experience local life without as much crowding. You can explore neighborhoods like the Bohnenviertel, known for its unique character with antique shops and cafés, or the numerous public stairs ("Stäffele") that reveal city views and local life.

Safetybalanced · 49Why

Stuttgart is generally a low-risk destination for tourists, with relatively low violent crime rates and well-lit streets. However, as in any large city, you should be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas like the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), shopping streets, and on public transport.

Weatherstrong · 57Why

You'll enjoy a temperate climate with warm summers (June to August, between 20°C and 30°C) and the city comes alive with outdoor festivals. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer mild temperatures and are ideal for exploring, with vineyards changing colors. While rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, summer months can bring sudden thunderstorms.

Beautyvery strong · 93Why

The city is nestled in a valley surrounded by hills and extensive vineyards, giving it a unique topography and panoramic views from numerous vantage points. You can climb the Killesbergturm for a stunning vista or stroll through the Schlossgärten, which are part of the city's "Green U".
