Super Sint Maarten Lichtjesparade (Lantern Parade)
Wednesday 11 November
Super Sint Maarten Lichtjesparade (Lantern Parade)
Join the festive Super Sint Maarten Lantern Parade in Amsterdam's Indische Buurt. Children and families gather with handmade lanterns and light sculptures, accompanied by music from fanfare bands. The parade starts from Ambonplein and returns for a closing show. This event celebrates the tradition of Saint Martin's Day with light, warmth, and sharing. Participants can also join workshops beforehand to create their own lanterns.
Saint Martin's Day (Sint Maarten)
November 11th is Saint Martin's Day, widely celebrated in the Netherlands. Children typically go door-to-door with handmade lanterns, singing songs in exchange for treats like candy or fruit. While not a public holiday, schools and work generally continue. The day is also recognized as the official start of the Carnival season in the Netherlands, though Amsterdam itself does not have a strong carnival tradition with large public celebrations on this date.

Ongoing Roadworks and Infrastructure Projects
Various large-scale roadworks and infrastructure projects are ongoing in and around Amsterdam in 2026, including the Zuidasdok project (A10 Ring Zuid), the IJ-tunnel closure (from July 2026 to November 2028), and work on Surinameplein and Linnaeusstraat/Middenweg. These are not specific to November 11th but may cause general traffic disruption. Localized temporary street closures are expected during the Sint Maarten parade in Indische Buurt.
