Good to know about Marrakesh

  • Menara Airport is very close to the city center, but it’s crucial to agree on a price with taxi drivers before getting in, as they often try to overcharge tourists for the short ride. Source
  • The Alsa city buses are an affordable way to get around outside the Medina, but be aware that buses can get very crowded and rarely have air conditioning, so avoid peak hours if you can. Source
  • While there are no trails within the city, the High Atlas is just an hour away, offering vast hiking opportunities; however, for anything beyond easy routes, hiring a local guide is highly recommended for safety and to discover hidden gems. Source
  • Marrakech is generally safe, but solo female travelers should dress modestly, particularly in the Medina, and be prepared for unwanted attention in the souks; it’s best to have a firm but polite response ready. Source
  • Marrakech can be noisy, especially in the Medina and Jemaa el-Fna, but many Riads feature internal courtyards with a surprising level of quietness that offer a serene escape from the city's hustle. Source
  • The real nightlife scene kicks off on Thursdays and Fridays, with many venues hosting special events and themed parties well into the early hours, not just on the weekends. Source
  • While tap water is treated and technically potable in most places, quality can vary and most locals and visitors prefer to drink bottled water to avoid any stomach upset. Source
  • While the Medina is heavily tourist-oriented, for a more authentic experience and to see everyday Moroccan life, venture outside the main souks into residential neighborhoods or local markets in Guéliz and Mellah. Source

Year-round profile

How Marrakesh scores, dimension by dimension

Calmbalanced · 43Why

While Djemaa el-Fna square and the souks can be loud, you can find quiet in gardens like Jardin Majorelle or within the inner courtyards of a riad. The Gueliz neighborhood, the "new city", offers a more modern and calmer atmosphere if you prefer a different pace. Source

Adventurelight · 29Why

Direct adventure activities in the city are limited; for hiking or climbing, you should plan a day trip to the Atlas Mountains. Source

Naturequiet · 15Why

Extensive nature is not within the city; for mountains or expansive natural landscapes, you will need to leave Marrakesh and explore the Atlas foothills. Within the city, Jardin Majorelle offers a curated green space. Source

Foodquiet · 20Why

Do not expect a high-end dining scene or a wide array of specialty coffee shops here; instead, focus on traditional Moroccan food found in the souks and local eateries.

Sportlight · 39Why

You can find good routes for running in parks or along some boulevards. For more intense outdoor sports like hiking or climbing, you will need to venture outside the city. Source

Culturevery strong · 72Why

Marrakesh has a rich history and distinctive architecture, with many museums like the Musée Yves Saint Laurent and historical sites in the Medina. The city hosts several festivals, especially in electronic music and film. Source

Sociallight · 35Why

Nightlife is limited and a visible social scene is discreet. To meet people, look for cultural events or specific interest groups online.

Familybalanced · 47Why

Marrakesh can be a mixed experience for families; while there are activities like exploring the medina, the intensity of Djemaa el-Fna can be overwhelming for young children. Consider staying in a riad with a pool for a safe play space.

Romancequiet · 17Why

There is no wide array of high-end dining or active thermal spas for romance. To create an intimate setting, look for private rooftop dinners at a riad or quiet sunset strolls in the gardens.

Productivitystrong · 61Why

With good fixed internet speed, you can work well here, and the lower cost of living is advantageous for longer stays. While coworking spaces are available, they are not numerous.

Valuestrong · 70Why

You will get a lot for your money here, as the cost of living and median hotel prices are generally favorable.

Authenticitybalanced · 46Why

The city has a mixed balance of local and tourist; while the medina offers an authentic experience, top attractions are often crowded. To feel a more local vibe, explore the less-trafficked souks outside the main routes.

Safetystrong · 60Why

You will generally feel comfortable and safe here, with a relatively low crime index.

Weatherstrong · 64Why

The climate here will generally suit you well, with many hours of clear sun throughout the year.

Beautyvery strong · 72Why

The city is notably beautiful, combining unique urban aesthetics with distinctive architecture that you can appreciate throughout the medina and its monuments.

Seaquiet · 0Why

There are no beaches near Marrakesh; the closest sea is a few hours away on the Atlantic coast, such as Essaouira. Source
