What Munich is like

Munich leans hardest into Productivity, Social and Romance — and Sea matters least here.
Good to know about Munich
- If you want to witness the traditional 'Anstich' (first beer tapping) at Oktoberfest, arrive very early on the first Saturday; the Schottenhamel tent fills up quickly, often by 9 AM. Source
- Don't miss the Renke (whitefish) from Bavarian lakes like Ammersee, which is at its best from spring through autumn and often enjoyed as 'Steckerlfisch' (fish grilled on a stick) at beer gardens. Source
- While perfectly safe to drink, Munich's tap water is exceptionally hard due to its alpine origin, which can noticeably affect the taste of your coffee or tea if you're not used to it. Source
- To get to the airport, the S-Bahn (S1 or S8) is fastest, but purchase a specific airport ticket (Airport-City-Day-Ticket or EinzelFahrticket Gesamtnetz) as a standard city fare won't cover the full route. Source
- During mushroom season, do not pick more than one kilo of mushrooms per person for personal consumption, as anything beyond that is illegal and can result in fines. Source
- For a panoramic view of Munich's skyline, don't just go to the Frauenkirche; the New Town Hall tower (Neues Rathaus) offers a less crowded and often overlooked perspective. Source
- For a less crowded cherry blossom experience, skip the English Garden and head to the small Künstlergarten in Maxvorstadt, which offers a stunning display in April. Source
- While public transit is excellent, if you're staying outside the very center, check night connections as S-Bahns and U-Bahns stop running, but an extensive night bus network covers most areas. Source
