- Internet is fast, but most Western services are blocked; ensure you have a reliable, pre-configured VPN before arriving to access Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Source
- The metro is incredibly extensive and efficient, but the 'Shanghai Metro' app is indispensable for navigation, real-time wait times, and route planning in English. Source
- While Gucun Park is the most famous for viewing, go on weekdays and early mornings, as weekends see massive crowds arriving on organized tours. Source
- The Shanghai Museum, an ancient Chinese art museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Center are free, but advance booking is mandatory, especially for the Shanghai Museum, which is often fully booked. Source
- The coffee scene is surprisingly advanced and competitive; expect a wide range of brewing methods and local roasters, often in tiny but stylish spaces on backstreets. Source
- While many young people and professionals speak some English, don't assume everyone will; having a translation app with voice and text is an essential tool for daily interactions. Source
- To secure tickets for popular shows at the Shanghai Grand Theatre or Shanghai Oriental Art Center, it's best to book well in advance through their official websites, as they sell out quickly. Source
